A Night (or Day) at the Movies!

Okay, yesterdays post was a little lame so I am told (by my wife, Debbie our innkeeper, even my daughters!) "Who's thinking about hiking when it's still under 50 and raining" they asked? Well, actually that's not EXACTLY the way they phrased their criticism. Anyone who really knows each of them knows that only Debbie would be that polite.

So, how about movies as a topic? The Academy Awards were just given out with all their pomp and circumstance. But what about the average viewers opinion and comments about some of the movies out there recently? Well, not that you asked...but here's my somewhat irreverent opinion on the movies I've seen recently (and I HAVE seen every one of these movies):

"Brooklyn's Finest" - Good cop, bad cop, bad cop, bad cop, bad cop. No one in their right mind wants to go see this movie! I don't care whether you are a Richard Gere fan or not. Stay home or see something else. This movie is all drugs, raw sex, and lots of violence. Don't waste your money, you can see all this stuff on TV these days.

"Shutter Island" - This is a cerebral, thinking persons film and Leonardo DiCaprio is at his best in this role. Just make sure you get there and get settled in well before the movie starts because you better pay attention from the VERY first flicker on the screen. This movie doesn't quite fit the film noir genre, but it is worth every penny you'll pay to see it. Of course, I gave YOU a piece of advice I wasn't privy to, so now I have to pay to go see it again just so I can figure out why it took me so long to "get" the film. And NO Christie, I did NOT cry at this movie!

"Cop Out" - Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan trying to be Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. Need I say more? On second thought, I do need to say more. This movie needs to "Die Hard" (and fast!)

"Avatar" - I don't even know why I am writing about this movie. If you haven't seen it, you are probably the ONLY person in the U.S. that hasn't! I saw the 3-D version and it was great. After about 2 minutes I forgot I had those Doogie Howser glasses on over my regular specs and was immersed in the world of director James Cameron. I know it didn't get a whole bunch of awards, but this movie has nice acting, stunning visuals, and a clear message about caring for our environment. If you haven't seen it....GO!

"Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief" - As you all know, I spent a LOT of time in the basement a couple weeks ago. When I finally got out of the dungeon, I told Diane I was going to the movies. What I wanted was a total escape and no reason to think about anything. Well, that's just the type of entertainment this movie provides. Kids will like it, but this is just a plain fun and feel good movie to go see. I highly recommend it if you too find yourself in the basement for a week!

"Green Zone" - Why can't Matt Damon stay with movies like "Good Will Hunting", "The Talented Mr. Ripley", and "The Departed". We don't need Jason Bourne in an Army uniform being filmed by a camera person who's jittery and can't get the lighting right, to tell us there were no WMD's in Iraq. On the heels of a brilliant film like "Hurt Locker", don't waste your money on this one. REALLY!

"The Blind Side" - This IS the movie to go see if you are having a bad day or are down for whatever reason. This movie will give you hope...it will renew your spirit...it will make you feel proud to live in a country that has the freedoms and resources we do. Ah shucks, just go see it...and YES Christie, I DID cry at this one!

Don't forget the popcorn y'all.

  2. You just tell your in-house critics that people might not be thinking of hiking *today*, when it's cold-ish and rainy, but this is the time they are making their plans for their summer hols ... ;)
