OK, so I know I have been delinquent in posting these last weeks but I've been taking classes and studying to take a state exam. It's been over 23 years since I took an exam for "grade" so I've been pretty freaked out about the whole thing. In any case, I took the exam yesterday morning and passed....whew, what a relief, my eyes were starting to look like "Minion Eyes."
What exam did I take and what's this all about? Well, to find that out I guess you'll just have to come to The Waverly Inn for a night or two, sit on the front porch during social hour, and I'll share the good news with you (and it IS good news, I assure you!)
Until then, here are some reviews of the movies I have seen recently (when I was too whacked out to study any more!)
Well, what can you say? If you are old enough to remember the original television series then you will absolutely LOVE this movie. Even if you have no idea who the original "A-Team" is, GO, you'll have a great time.
The director and writers stayed absolutely true to the original series and this movie has everything...a little love, a little plot, a lot of action and a TON of high explosives! Combine this all with the whit and sarcasm of the team members and I laughed so hard I had tears running down my cheeks 25 minutes into the show.
In short, if you just want to go be entertained for 1 hour and 57 minutes, then go see this movie. You won't come home ready to change the world but you'll have a smile on your face for sure!
First let me tell you that I saw this with Tori our 17 year old, and my wife Diane and all three of us thought it was cute and funny. The Minions steal the show and even though we had no idea what they were saying, just guessing made us laugh. (Before YOU go, read the paragraph below on what to take with you.)
The movie actually does have a plot for the adults and a moral to the story for the kids. That said, for all you grown ups, all I will tell you is to pay CLOSE attention to the humorous stuff the editors have included. If I told you what they were I'd have to kill you so no spoilers here. I'll just tell you to pay attention from the very beginning and read anything and everything you can get your eyes to catch in terms of signs, billboards, names, logos, etc.. Whoever did the editing had a great time I assure you. I can just picture a lonely editor at 3AM sitting in front of a screen somewhere and having an epiphany about injecting one of these little things into the animation and sitting there LHAO all by themselves.
So, before you go, find someone with either a Droid or an I-Phone or I-Touch and get them to let you borrow it for the evening. Ask them to download the Minion translator app from Best Buy onto the device and at the movie theater it will text translate the Minion Speak of the credits into English. I told our oldest daughter about this before she went and she called me after the movie and told me some of the things they said. I almost died laughing at HER telling me and I was sitting here at the inn. I can't wait for the movie to come out in DVD and see the translation of the Minions thoughout the entire movie.
So to summarize, the Minions steal the show but the overall movie is excellent. Be sure to stay for the trailers of this movie as well. Even without the Minion translator you'll laugh yourself silly....and WITH the translator, well if you have breathing problems, make sure you have your inhaler ready!
This is a very interesting movie. Of course everyone wants to see Tom Cruise and whatever stunt filled shoot-em-up he can put himself in. Enjoy all the razz ma tazz while you can because eventually Cruise is going to be too old to do some of this crazy stuff, regardless of stunt men to fill in for him. What's "interesting" is that Cameron Diaz actually does a wonderful job acting in this film. Said differently, this movie is NOT all Tom Cruise (as usual). Diaz gets about the same screen time that Cruise does and she absolutely makes the most of it. Diaz is someone who needs more attention and recognition for her stand alone acting capabilities so perhaps being cast in this movie will help to accelerate her individual career.
Spoiler alert...there's a little spoiler here so skip this paragraph if you want total surprise at the theater:
As far as the movie itself is concerned, it's as implausible a script as you can imagine. I mean, give me a break, guy gets on airplane, kills everyone (except Diaz) single handedly and then lands the plane in a corn field and walks away (carrying Diaz....how far is never really very clear, but if Cruise had called me, I would have helped!)? Oh pleeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzeeee! And that's just the first 20 minutes of the show. It gets crazier and crazier throughout the entire movie but you really didn't expect Cruise to change his Mission Impossible ways did you?
Overall, the movie has some gorgeous scenery in it and some terrific cityscapes. That's if you can get your adrenaline levels down low enough to pay attention to them after the excitement in the previous scene(s). In short, I liked it and it was a fun way to spend the afternoon when it was really hot outside. I even went back and saw it a second time a week later when Diane said she wanted to go. I'm not so sure whether it was Diane's asking, Cruise's antics, or Diaz's acting that made it enjoyable the second time but, for the sake of my longevity on this planet, anyone talking to Diane can tell her I said I went solely because she asked! (I'll short sheet your bed next time you come if you say anything else.)
We hope we've given you yet another reason to visit The Waverly Inn in Hendersonville, NC very soon!
