What if one Flat Rock Playhouse was not enough?

Then you would add other theatre options, right?!

Flat Rock Playhouse has added a new theatre right here in downtown Hendersonville. It is a 252 seat theatre at 125 South Main Street, nine blocks from our front door. It is five rows of theatre seating set up stadium style in a horse shoe around the stage. The first row is on the same level as the actors. Fabulous! They christened the new space with ‘Once on This Island’ during a weeklong performance in June. It was an incredible concert with a story that was uplifting and full of life. If you want to see pictures of the new downtown theatre go to www.flatrockplayhouse.org . The Shows & Events drop down menu has an “Extra-Seasonal Productions” button. Go to ‘Once on This Island’ and scroll down to the photos. They are pretty spectacular and you will get the feel of the new venue. Witness for the Prosecution” is the next show at the new downtown venue. This Agatha Christie play is one of my favorites. I cannot wait to see it.

With all of the extra stage productions you can see a different show every day! Last week we saw two plays and went to one of the Music on the Rock series. Red, White and Tuna” was playing at the main stage in Flat Rock on Thursday night. It was a Fourth of July high school reunion and very fast paced. We went to Music on the Rock on their Second Stage on Friday night. The music was ABBA and voices were beautiful. We finished our weekend with “Tuna Does Vegas” on Sunday afternoon. Both of these plays continue through July 10.

So…while I am looking at all of this information on the internet and in their brochure I should probably tell you what is scheduled for July. Along with what I have told you about already there is "Hairspray" on the main stage toward the end of the month. The Music on the Rock series on the second stage has Music of Motown at the beginning of the month and Songs of James Taylor & Joni Mitchell: Unplugged in the middle of the month.

The playhouse keeps growing and it has been enjoyable to watch.

We hope we've given you yet another reason to visit downtown Hendersonville and the 1898 Waverly Inn very soon!

Hendersonville & Western North Carolina Mountains Things to Do

I was looking through some pictures that my daughter took of the azaleas in the yard this spring and it reminded me that the flowers looked spectacular this year. It was chilly and warm and rainy and sunny. We had something for everyone.

As I look at what we have scheduled for June in the mountains, I feel the same way. There is definitely something for everyone. Hiking in Dupont State Forest, http://www.hikewnc.info/trailheads/pisgah/ has some great trail information about Pisgah National Forest. I used it for the first time this week when I was looking for a temperature drop. It was probably twenty degrees cooler than Charlotte and Atlanta up there. Nice.

Music on Main Street debuts on Friday at 7pm! Tuxedo Junction (1940’s swing and bebop – 1990’s music with Pink Cadillac and other favorites) is playing in the street by the Visitors Center. The Hendersonville Antique Car Club will be out there showing off their vintage and antique cars also. If you want more information about the classic car show - call 828-696-4168 or 828-388-0671.

The farmers produce is coming in also. The farms and tailgate markets are a lot of fun early on Saturdays. I found a beautiful Japanese Maple Tree for the side porch and fresh lettuce at the same tailgate market last Saturday!

Along with my slow and easy ways of spending the weekend there is an Outdoor Art Show and Sale in Laurel Park Shopping Center, 828-696-3804, The Blue Ridge Barbecue Festival with 80 cook teams at Harmon Field in Tryon NC, The Asheville Kennel Club, AKC All Breed Dog Show and the National Walking Horse Show at the WNC Agricultural Center in Fletcher.

Spend the evening at Flat Rock Playhouse (one of the top summer stock theatres in the USA) watching Chicago or Music on The Rock Concert featuring I Left My Heart in San Francisco: The Music of Tony Bennett. 828-693-0731. Or, go to Asheville Community Theatre and watch The Dixie Swim Club. 828-254-1320.

We hope we've given you yet another reason to visit the 1898 Waverly Inn in Hendersonville, NC very soon!
